The Top Three Causes of Accidents in the US
Any EMS professional has seen the results of a car accident during the course of his or her work. In fact, he or she has likely seen many, because car accidents are one of the major causes of death and injury in the United States. Many of such accidents are preventable.
By understanding what causes accidents, and what drivers can do to avoid these situations, you’ll keep the road safer for you, your passengers, and fellow drivers throughout the country.
The top three causes of car accidents can all be avoided.
Distracted driving occurs when the driver has their eyes everywhere but the road.
With so much technology at our fingertips, it’s hard to put that tech away. From smart phones to tablets to Bluetooth ear pieces and built-in entertainment systems, there are a lot of things competing for our attention when we’re behind the wheel. Add in the low tech distractions of eating, talking, personal grooming etc. and we can see why distracted driving is so dangerous.
To combat distracted driving, the solution is simple. When you are driving, focus on driving. Before you get behind the wheel, turn your devices to silent and leave eating and grooming for a time when you aren’t operating a vehicle.
If you absolutely have to use a device such as a phone or sat nav, make sure it’s set to hands-free – or ask one of your passengers to do it for you. Also, reminding your passengers that your main focus is to drive, not chat, could save your lives.
Drunk driving is entirely preventable but remains a common cause of accidents. Many of these are serious and take the lives of innocent people who were not operating a vehicle under the influence.
The solution is obvious – never drive after drinking. There are several options like taxis, ridesharing, walking, public transit, or using a designated driver.
By making arrangements in advance, you can remove the temptation to drink and drive. Alcohol makes people less cautious, so postponing the decision about whether to drive until after you’ve had something to drink is never a good idea.
If your friends are drinking, take responsibility and help them find a way home without letting them get behind the wheel.
Speeding is so commonplace that people may not even recognize it as a risk anymore. It causes a massive number of accidents in the US. Speed limits exist for a reason. When people choose to ignore those limits, they put themselves and others at risk.
If someone is going faster than they should be in a vehicle, they have less time to react to a problem on the road or with their vehicle. Combine speed with any other accident factor, and you are far more likely to get injured or killed. It’s a huge risk.
What’s more? Speeding does not save you that much time.
Remember that it’s better to arrive alive and without harming anyone than it is to arrive on-time. Drop your speed for safety’s sake.
Pay attention to the 3 top causes of accidents in the US, and you’ll make roads safer for everyone, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike.
